Looking to Make an Important Career Move?

Six critical areas to focus your immediate attention on from experienced Career Transition coach Tim Chapman:

1. Your Options - It's crucial to determine the right next career options that not only align with your capabilities but also your strong preferences. Ask yourself, "What is it that I really, really want to do next?" Avoid the temptation to answer with "more of the same." If you're struggling to find an answer, don't hesitate to seek help from others to explore and widen your options.

2. Your Capabilities - Quickly clarify what makes you distinct and effective in the workplace and beyond. Ask yourself, "What combination of specific knowledge, skills, experiences, behaviours and values will make me particularly attractive to a future employer?" Be cautious of understating your capabilities, as most people have more skills and achievements than they give themselves credit for.

3. Your Narrative - Developing a powerful and distinctive career narrative (both verbal and written) is mission critical for success when seeking out and securing a new role. Craft a concise version (3 to 5 minutes) for quick introductions and a longer version for in-depth interviews.

4. Your Stories - Select your six to ten most significant career successes that best illustrate your capabilities in action. Ask yourself “What are my proudest achievements in my career to date that I most want to showcase to others”. Put a particular emphasis upon your more recent successes. Practice telling these success stories in a succinct and impactful way.

5. Your Opportunities - Finding job opportunities that align with your criteria is often the most challenging part of the process. Ask yourself, "How can I swiftly access and utilize networks (my own and others'), recruitment and search firms and direct approaches to targeted employers to generate a significant range of great job opportunities within my desired scope?"

6. Your Interviews - Rigorous preparation for upcoming shortlist interviews is crucial. Ask yourself, "How can I ensure I am thoroughly prepared?" Seek someone to conduct role-playing sessions, master interview techniques, and provide honest feedback. Avoid the disappointment of reaching the final stage and falling short due to lack of confident preparation.
